The day started out with the community’s morning reflections group.  Everybody was in a great mood anxiously awaiting the beautiful scenery that can only come from finding peace during drug rehab in Utah.  After stopping for one of Utah’s famous breakfast burritos it was up to the mountain resort for half pipes, rails, and a ton of snow!

The community was accompanied by Life Coach and recreational drug treatment counselors Peter Busch and Jessie Dennerline.  Clients formed groups based on experience level so that experience fostered the community to bond.  After a high energy morning full of a variety of runs a group lunch at the mountain lodge was great for recharging everybody.  A few more runs in the afternoon and no injuries(yay) and everyone was ready for a nice cup of hot chocolate and the trip home.

The next trip can’t come soon enough!

New Roads chef Robert Soria and clients of the drug treatment center went door-to-door beginning last week, selling cheesecakes and then delivering the finished product the next day. Soria supervises baking the cheesecakes at the facility kitchen. Proceeds from the dessert sales go to the New Roads Foundation, where the money will fund treatment scholarships for young adults who cannot afford it.

"We're getting tremendous feedback," Soria said. "We do make a very, very nice cheesecake."

Soria and four to six clients go out, sell the desserts then return to New Roads kitchen and make cheesecakes to fill those orders. They box the cakes and deliver them in person. They've filled 55 orders in the last few days. The clients were hesitant to approach potential customers at first, but warmed to the task after they made a couple of sales.

"The patrons are overwhelmed and surprised with the quality of the cakes. They were wowed by the taste of the cakes," Soria said.

New Roads cheesecake bakers will take orders from anywhere in the county.

"As long as I'm given 24-hours notice, a physical address and a phone number, I'll deliver," Soria said. "The clients are resourceful."

Food vendors donated most of the ingredients. New Roads LLC pays the clients' salaries and the cost of remaining materials. Profits from the dessert sales go to the foundation, which covers costs at the treatment center for young adults who cannot pay.

Soria has been in the culinary business all his adult life, after graduating from a culinary institute in California. Then he worked with a kosher master chef and ultimately went to corporate restaurant work and began consulting and traveling. Most of his work was done in the Middle East, including opening a Pizza Hut in Gaza. But it's gone now, he says.

Soria is the facility chef and teaches culinary arts to residents. Clients are paid for their work in the kitchen and as they become more proficient their salary is raised. Like the many of the New Roads management, Soria lost a child to heroin addiction. He knows treatment and follow-up isn't enough -- the clients must leave their old roads behind and take new healthy roads.

New Roads Treatment Centers were conceived by a group of Utah business leaders who had seen firsthand the ravages of addiction on their loved ones. They organized to provide affordable, effective treatment to young adults.

Carl Rogers’ work in developing what he came to call the Person Centered Approach has impacted me greatly as a therapist, a husband, a father, a friend, and as a person in general. The philosophy that guides my practice and hopefully my life is the powerful idea that understanding and accepting one’s self and one another is the basis for healing and growth.
Though I utilize a variety of therapeutic interventions in my practice I find that the most effective intervention is that of fostering a therapeutic relationship. Such a relationship allows those involved to experience genuine empathy, acceptance, and unconditional positive regard.
I earned a graduate degree in social work from the University of South Carolina where I emphasized in individual, family, and group therapy. During internships there and since that time I have been fortunate to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and in a variety of professional settings. In my practice I have provided therapy for those suffering from the following issues: addiction, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, effects of trauma, relationship difficulties, anger, grief and loss, and managing chronic mental illness.
Though these issues can be overwhelming for individuals and families I have consistently been reinforced in my belief of the resilience of the human spirit and the reality of healing. I find great satisfaction in growing as a person as I am privileged to join with others who are on their own path of growth.

Many addicts delay the preparation process for drug rehab because thy dread having to come to grips with some of the issues from their past and current life as well.  New Roads Treatment Centers knows this is a difficult time for both addicts and loved ones and we have created a open an easy process for admissions.

There are a number of “obstacles” that will stand in your way to succeed in recovery.  Among these are a lack self-exploration, trying to “finish” something that has no time frame, and trying to be perfect in recovery.  All of these must be taken into consideration during the drug and alcohol rehab process.  It is a mental marathon of sorts that has a large impact of your future.

Just like a marathon runner it is important to work your way up to the full challenge of sobriety.  A success strategy is something you can incorporate into a drug treatment plan:

1.               Find a good source for information and support.

2.               If you are willing to make a larger time investment, consider becoming knowledgeable and using different philosophies and treatment modalities.

3.               In your minds eye go through the process of a drug rehab center and what a positive outcome will look like.  Take your time and think about applying strategies and goals.

4.               Allow for yourself to make mistakes without killing yourself emotionally.  Rehab is a process that includes peaks and valleys, setbacks and accomplishments.  It takes time.

The specific treatment of women with substance abuse disorders must take in a variety of issues and factors in order to be efficient and effective. Women dealing with drug addiction vary by location, culture, race and living circumstances.  The common thread that drug treatment centers must focus on during the recovery process are specific women’s issues and how they relate to a substance abuse disorder.

Assessments have been used to analyze data from the individual to understand the psychosocial, biological, epidemiological, and psychological influences surrounding their substance abuse disorder.  This information is then used to decide what method or treatment plan is going to be used and how to integrate gender specific programming into the plan as well.

Gender specific addiction treatment is relatively new as far as documented research and results.  In this area, the most significant findings have been that of social and cultural stigma’s relating to women and addiction, the limited resources and education at their disposal, and the psychosocial and/or psychological difficulties often instigated by physical and sexual abuse that is pervasive in the female substance abusing population. Research has also found that educating communities in treatment support activities, having women in prominent clinical roles during treatment, and employing single site services for both substance treatment and child services have had a positive effect for lasting treatment. Having specifically tailored treatment approaches and facilities is beneficial to the female population seeking to overcome addiction.

Once you have made a decision and are comfortable with the location and programming to start down the road to recovery, the next step is to develop a treatment plan specific to your use, future needs, and sobriety.  This is not a one step process.  It is something that will need to adjust and adapt as your recovery does.  It will need to flexible in order to keep your interest in the difficult process of getting sober.

One of the final steps in establishing a successful transition back to real life while in drug treatment is developing relapse prevention plan, triggers and thought reframes.  This can be built into your original treatment plan but needs to be expanded upon once you have a better understanding.  Having an awareness of triggers and reframing negative thinking errors can go a long way to avoiding relapse.  If a relapse does occur it is essential to have a plan put together before hand so there are steps to follow and a support system to rely on.

Joellyn joins New Roads as Clinical Director.  She has extensive experience in the field of inpatient substance abuse.  Her background includes direct services to individuals, groups and families, as well as in administration, supervision, and program development. Her training and experience integrates psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral approaches to healthy individuation, the development of positive self esteem, and trauma resolution.

Joellyn brings sensitivity and compassion to her expertise in restructuring patterns of self-regulation and motivation and the development of substance-free coping and social interaction.  She embodies a love of the outdoors and a passion for healthy living.

Substance abuse in the young adult population is highly associated with delinquency, low education achievement, suicide and other personal and family issues.  Not all substance abusers attain severe dependence, however a lot of them need specialized and specific treatment at a young adult drug rehab facility.  There is a significant gap between young people in need of rehab and those that are actually fortunate enough to be receiving addiction treatment.

8.4 percent of 18-25 year olds in the United States are in need of some sort of help for addiction, but under a tenth of them ever get it. This treatment gap is linked to a public concern regarding the effectiveness and quality of the facilities and programs that are currently in the industry.  A lot of individuals working in the healthcare setting feel that there is not a lot that can be done as far as substance abuse is concerned.  There is however, new empirically validated research supporting new kinds treatment approaches for consistent positive outcomes.

Are there guarantees for my loved one in drug rehab?

Any quality above board treatment center can only provide each client with the tools and opportunities to take advantage of and succeed in life.  As with almost everything else in this long life there are no guarantees.  Addiction is such a tricky disease that each person affected has to have a very individualized rehab process with peaks and valleys that are unique to them.  However, if a client fully releases themselves and buys into the program, they’re chances of long-term recovery increase significantly.

How can you tell if the addiction treatment program is good for young adults?

There is no single way to tell, however there are some signs that can give an indication if a drug and alcohol facility does quality work or not.  Addiction recovery as an industry makes billions of dollars each year, reputations are abundant and information is out there to gather.  Talking with consultants who refer families to drug rehab centers can be useful.  A large indication of the quality of a treatment center is the professional staff that is employed.  A program could have the most luxurious accommodations, helicopter rides, spas, and executive chefs and be absolutely of no benefit to the client because there is no therapeutic work being done.  Just because a drug and alcohol rehab center is expensive does not mean people are recovering there.

How do I decide where is best for my loved one?

This is the golden question.  Because young adults are so dynamic and have so much life to live their treatment must be specific to them as a person and specialized to their unique characteristics.  There are thousands of drug treatment centers in the U.S., it is important to do the necessary research to make sure what a program offers matches up with the needs of the client.  Young adult treatment centers for instance, should focus on building life skills, connecting to higher education institutions and building professional habits.
