Carl Rogers’ work in developing what he came to call the Person Centered Approach has impacted me greatly as a therapist, a husband, a father, a friend, and as a person in general. The philosophy that guides my practice and hopefully my life is the powerful idea that understanding and accepting one’s self and one another is the basis for healing and growth.
Though I utilize a variety of therapeutic interventions in my practice I find that the most effective intervention is that of fostering a therapeutic relationship. Such a relationship allows those involved to experience genuine empathy, acceptance, and unconditional positive regard.
I earned a graduate degree in social work from the University of South Carolina where I emphasized in individual, family, and group therapy. During internships there and since that time I have been fortunate to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and in a variety of professional settings. In my practice I have provided therapy for those suffering from the following issues: addiction, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, effects of trauma, relationship difficulties, anger, grief and loss, and managing chronic mental illness.
Though these issues can be overwhelming for individuals and families I have consistently been reinforced in my belief of the resilience of the human spirit and the reality of healing. As support staff, counselors, therapists, or directors, there are a number of factors that are issues in the treatment of addicted young adult professionals.  It may not be a huge difference in a larger picture, but many times successful recovery and sobriety lies  within the details of a specifically designed and carried out treatment plan.

A drug treatment team must have a nondiscriminatory attitude as part of its culture.  This must also come from the client culture as well.  This culture will be conducive to gaining knowledge of the responsibility as a counselor and as positive peer member.  Addiction treatment for professionals requires a high level of competence and legal and moral standards from the directors down to the trenches of support staff.

Any quality above board treatment center can only provide each client with the tools and opportunities to take advantage of and succeed in life.  As with almost everything else in this long life there are no guarantees.  Addiction is such a tricky disease that each person affected has to have a very individualized rehab process with peaks and valleys that are unique to them.  However, if a client fully releases themselves and buys into the program, they’re chances of long-term recovery increase significantly.

If any type of relationship is to be built with a client, they have to be able to rely on their treatment team when they are most vulnerable to provide a safe and stable recovery environment.  We all have had people in our lives that are flaky, untrustworthy, and disappointing.  These relationships tend to be superficial and do not last long.

Trust in a treatment team or professional should be the first aspect that is emphasized with a client.  If this dynamic is not developed, it is unlikely an addict will feel comfortable enough to share anything significant and start the process of recovery.  Trust can be the most important and effective tool in treatment.

Humor is another great tool to use while providing help at a young adult drug treatment center.  For many professionals, humor is something that comes natural.  It can be a critical element in developing a rapport with clients.

Establishing or owning a firm identity as a professional and as a whole treatment team can lend itself to more effective processes in treating addiction.  This consistency and repetitive message that clients will hear helps with boundaries and expectations that can be used throughout their long term recovery process.

Anger and/or depression cycles that have no real trigger or trauma behind them.

A new circle of peers, a distinct change in schedule, not wanting to talk about old friends or being overly dramatic in any conversation.

Showing a loss of interest in previous hobbies or interests that they may have been passionate about.

Lack of performance or failing in work or school environment or avoiding them altogether.

A loss of ambition and motivation, walking around in a haze or not really caring.

Always arguing or being defensive, acting paranoid or if everyone is just “out to get them.”

Constantly being caught in lies, unexplained money losses or buying habits.

A disregard for hygene, lowered self-worth and change in appearance.

Loss of cohearance or memory, inability to have a rational conversation.

Always isolating, staying in their room, removing themselves from any all communication with friends and loved ones.

These signs and behaviors are not guarantees a loved one is struggling with addiction.  They are simply a combination of symptoms to look for or make yourself aware of if there is suspicion of abuse.  At one time or another everybody shows a behavior or two listed here, it is when these processes become more evident and consistent over a period of time that something must be done before it is too late.

There are the normal signs that can show some insight – depression, isolating, acting out, among others…But you never really know.  The most important aspect is to ask questions.  Many times clients just need a platform or someone to ask them if they are having these thoughts.  It is not always the easiest subject to talk about.

Narcissism in young adult treatment is normal…where does this come from?

Although this is not always the case it does show up quite often.  The addict showing traits of a narcissist does not general feelings of superiority.  It is usually a sign of strong feelings of inadequacy.

What aspects are important in choosing counseling techniques for drug rehab?

There is no easy way to figure out what is going to be most effective for the client.  It takes some time to develop a rapport.  Normally the two most import factors determining treatment for addiction are the intellectual capacity and mental health status of the client.

What are some ways of building a strong trust and rapport for addiction counseling?

Something that is really important that clients don’t realize is that it is impossible not to communicate.  All non-verbal, body language and demeanor can say a lot about how to build a safe environment and relationship.  It is important for counselors to remember the clients will have their own interpretations of their non-verbal ques as well.

Length of stay in treatment is crucial to positive outcomes

There are many options when deciding which treatment center will be most effective.  There are varying levels of care including residential, day treatment, outpatient, and transitional drug and alcohol rehab.  No matter what option or level of care is needed, one of the most important elements in long-term sobriety is the amount of time actually spent in treatment.
