Many addicts delay the preparation process for drug rehab because thy dread having to come to grips with some of the issues from their past and current life as well. New Roads Treatment Centers knows this is a difficult time for both addicts and loved ones and we have created a open an easy process for admissions.

There are a number of “obstacles” that will stand in your way to succeed in recovery. Among these are a lack self-exploration, trying to “finish” something that has no time frame, and trying to be perfect in recovery. All of these must be taken into consideration during the drug and alcohol rehab process. It is a mental marathon of sorts that has a large impact of your future.

Just like a marathon runner it is important to work your way up to the full challenge of sobriety. A success strategy is something you can incorporate into a drug treatment plan:

1. Find a good source for information and support.

2. If you are willing to make a larger time investment, consider becoming knowledgeable and using different philosophies and treatment modalities.

3. In your minds eye go through the process of a drug rehab center and what a positive outcome will look like. Take your time and think about applying strategies and goals.

4. Allow for yourself to make mistakes without killing yourself emotionally. Rehab is a process that includes peaks and valleys, setbacks and accomplishments. It takes time.

Finding a facility or program that meets your needs is one of the first steps to gaining control of your life through addiction treatment. There are thousands of programs in the country with different methods, philosophies, and demographic specific treatment. Whether you are a teenager, young adult, male, female or any other specific, choosing the program that is best for you can be the difference in long term sobriety.

Once you have made a decision and are comfortable with the location and programming to start down the road to recovery, the next step is to develop a treatment plan specific to your use, future needs, and sobriety. This is not a one step process. It is something that will need to adjust and adapt as your recovery does. It will need to flexible in order to keep your interest in the difficult process of getting sober.

One of the final steps in establishing a successful transition back to real life while in drug treatment is developing relapse prevention plan, triggers and thought reframes. This can be built into your original treatment plan but needs to be expanded upon once you have a better understanding. Having an awareness of triggers and reframing negative thinking errors can go a long way to avoiding relapse. If a relapse does occur it is essential to have a plan put together before hand so there are steps to follow and a support system to rely on.

Recent research shows the most difficult demographic of addicts to get into and provide drug rehab for is the young adult population. Millions of young adults in the US are current users of illicit drugs. The highest percentage of drug use is between the ages of young adults 18-20.

Substance abuse in the young adult population is highly associated with delinquency, low education achievement, suicide and other personal and family issues. Not all substance abusers attain severe dependence, however a lot of them need specialized and specific treatment at a young adult drug rehab facility. There is a significant gap between young people in need of rehab and those that are actually fortunate enough to be receiving addiction treatment.

8.4 percent of 18-25 year olds in the United States are in need of some sort of help for addiction, but under a tenth of them ever get it. This treatment gap is linked to a public concern regarding the effectiveness and quality of the facilities and programs that are currently in the industry. A lot of individuals working in the healthcare setting feel that there is not a lot that can be done as far as substance abuse is concerned. There is however, new empirically validated research supporting new kinds treatment approaches for consistent positive outcomes.

Are there guarantees for my loved one in drug rehab?

Any quality above board treatment center can only provide each client with the tools and opportunities to take advantage of and succeed in life. As with almost everything else in this long life there are no guarantees. Addiction is such a tricky disease that each person affected has to have a very individualized rehab process with peaks and valleys that are unique to them. However, if a client fully releases themselves and buys into the program, they’re chances of long-term recovery increase significantly.

How can you tell if the addiction treatment program is good for young adults?

There is no single way to tell, however there are some signs that can give an indication if a drug and alcohol facility does quality work or not. Addiction recovery as an industry makes billions of dollars each year, reputations are abundant and information is out there to gather. Talking with consultants who refer families to drug rehab centers can be useful. A large indication of the quality of a treatment center is the professional staff that is employed. A program could have the most luxurious accommodations, helicopter rides, spas, and executive chefs and be absolutely of no benefit to the client because there is no therapeutic work being done. Just because a drug and alcohol rehab center is expensive does not mean people are recovering there.

How do I decide where is best for my loved one?

This is the golden question. Because young adults are so dynamic and have so much life to live their treatment must be specific to them as a person and specialized to their unique characteristics. There are thousands of drug treatment centers in the U.S., it is important to do the necessary research to make sure what a program offers matches up with the needs of the client. Young adult treatment centers for instance, should focus on building life skills, connecting to higher education institutions and building professional habits.

The Utah drug treatment program admissions process involves several comprehensive assessments of each resident’s condition and specific issues or needs, including medical, psychiatric and psychosocial status. Whenever possible, collateral information is collected from additional resources including family, schools and previous treatment provider(s).

Medical/Psych Assessment

Medical Director - Board Certified Addictionologist: Dr. Troy Lunsford - Dr Lunsford will conduct a medical and psychiatric assessment. We will also utilize outside resources of family referrals to aide this process.

Psychological Services

Psychological Services are provided by contracted psychologists. These services may include a comprehensive assessment of personality characteristics, intellectual functioning, social adaptability, and screening for organic dysfunction. Occasionally, residents may be referred to psychologists that specialize in areas outside of the scope of specialty of the New Roads staff. Many Utah drug treatment centers are connected and share available resources when necessary.

Chemical Dependency Assessment

The first assessment that is utilized is a chemical dependency screening. This interview examines psychoactive substance use and related issues, establishes a baseline and identifies areas of need and issues. The assessment measures seven chemical dependency-related domains: drug use, alcohol use, medical problems, psychiatric issues, legal issues, family/social issues, and employment/support issues. The assessment will also help to determine if there are any psychological issues that would prohibit your loved one from attaining complete recovery, if there are any risks for danger to self or others and if there is any propensity towards mood, personality or cognitive disorders. This assessment also evaluates a client’s treatment and recovery belief systems and determines if there are any indicators that your young adult child would be resistant to the treatment process.

Psychosocial Assessment

The psychosocial assessment reviews a client’s medical history, family history, leisure and social functioning, developmental history, educational functioning, legal history, drug and alcohol history and any significant events that could impact your teen's treatment process.

Individual Family Sessions

Individual sessions with young adults and their family members will be conducted by the Family Therapist primarily for the purpose of assessing family therapy needs to complete treatment goals and addressing conflicts and sensitive issues that the family may prefer to discuss privately rather than address in group therapy sessions.

Multi-Family Group

This group is held on Saturday one time a month. It is open to all clients and is facilitated by the Family Therapist. The multi-family group addresses issues that are common to all families such as communication, handling conflicts, and maintaining boundaries. It also gives us all a chance to “Re -identify” who we all are. Family members and residents share in a supportive atmosphere. This group also provides families with feedback and support from other family members who are experiencing similar difficulties.

If any type of relationship is to be built with a client, they have to be able to rely on their treatment team when they are most vulnerable to provide a safe and stable recovery environment.

There can be a generalized idea of what characteristics could lead to positive outcomes in drug or alcohol treatment for young adults. Some experts believe that the one of the most important characteristics in treating drug addicts would change based on the dynamic between the clients personality and the therapists or treatment team involved. Keeping that in mind, 4 aspects in professionals that can lead to healthy, productive recoveries in clients are:

Reliability

Trust

Humor

Firm Identity

If any type of relationship is to be built with a client, they have to be able to rely on their treatment team when they are most vulnerable to provide a safe and stable recovery environment. We all have had people in our lives that are flaky, untrustworthy, and disappointing. These relationships tend to be superficial and do not last long.

Trust in a treatment team or professional should be the first aspect that is emphasized with a client. If this dynamic is not developed, it is unlikely an addict will feel comfortable enough to share anything significant and start the process of recovery. Trust can be the most important and effective tool in treatment.

Humor is another great tool to use while providing help at a young adult drug treatment center. For many professionals, humor is something that comes natural. It can be a critical element in developing a rapport with clients.

Establishing or owning a firm identity as a professional and as a whole treatment team can lend itself to more effective processes in treating addiction. This consistency and repetitive message that clients will hear helps with boundaries and expectations that can be used throughout their long term recovery process.

Many struggling young adults show both behavioral and physical symptoms of possible drug or alcohol abuse. The following are behavioral elements to watch for in individuals that may be in need of help or possible admittance to drug rehab.

Anger and/or depression cycles that have no real trigger or trauma behind them.

A new circle of peers, a distinct change in schedule, not wanting to talk about old friends or being overly dramatic in any conversation.

Showing a loss of interest in previous hobbies or interests that they may have been passionate about.

Lack of performance or failing in work or school environment or avoiding them altogether.

A loss of ambition and motivation, walking around in a haze or not really caring.

Always arguing or being defensive, acting paranoid or if everyone is just “out to get them.”

Constantly being caught in lies, unexplained money losses or buying habits.

A disregard for hygene, lowered self-worth and change in appearance.

Loss of cohearance or memory, inability to have a rational conversation.

Always isolating, staying in their room, removing themselves from any all communication with friends and loved ones.

These signs and behaviors are not guarantees a loved one is struggling with addiction. They are simply a combination of symptoms to look for or make yourself aware of if there is suspicion of abuse. At one time or another everybody shows a behavior or two listed here, it is when these processes become more evident and consistent over a period of time that something must be done before it is too late.

How do you assess suicide risk in drug treatment?

There are the normal signs that can show some insight – depression, isolating, acting out, among others…But you never really know. The most important aspect is to ask questions. Many times clients just need a platform or someone to ask them if they are having these thoughts. It is not always the easiest subject to talk about.

Narcissism in young adult treatment is normal…where does this come from?

Although this is not always the case it does show up quite often. The addict showing traits of a narcissist does not general feelings of superiority. It is usually a sign of strong feelings of inadequacy.

What aspects are important in choosing counseling techniques for drug rehab?

There is no easy way to figure out what is going to be most effective for the client. It takes some time to develop a rapport. Normally the two most import factors determining treatment for addiction are the intellectual capacity and mental health status of the client.

What are some ways of building a strong trust and rapport for addiction counseling?

Something that is really important that clients don’t realize is that it is impossible not to communicate. All non-verbal, body language and demeanor can say a lot about how to build a safe environment and relationship. It is important for counselors to remember the clients will have their own interpretations of their non-verbal ques as well.

This lack of euphoria will inevitably cause aggression, anxiety, and at times paranoia in most upper drugs. Occasionally delusion, psychosis, hallucination and possible death are all side effects of extended drug abuse. Addiction rehab is sometimes the only option when chemical dependency gets to this point.

There are many different reasons people start using mind altering substances. Often times in the beginning addicts will start with what society considers less harmful drugs such as alcohol or marijuana and allow the use to manifest into full blown addiction. There is always hope, many Utah drug rehab centers can help. New Roads Treatment Centers is located in Provo, Utah with a majestic mountain setting and a plethora of activities for many different therapeutic environments Utah addiction treatment fosters positive outcomes.
