It is described as a craving. Usually psychological dependence appears with physiological dependence, but that is not always the case. This is the essential difference between an addict that has a disease and an individual that is a heavy substance abuser or is just chemically dependent on a drug.

Psychoactive chemical addicts use drugs to get pleasurable and desirable psychological effects. This can be the high of a cocaine binge, the euphoria of painkillers or heroine, or the numbness or loss of inhibitions of alcohol. After some time though, as with any drug prescribed or not, they may only use the chemicals to avoid the withdrawal symptoms caused by their physiological dependence. Most of the chemicals that are used by addicts cause not only a physiological dependence.

Both physiological and psychological dependence must be present to classify an individual as psychoactive chemical dependent, but not always an addict. Often people are prescribed psychoactive chemicals for a medical condition, and they are used properly and in the correct dosage. However, a person can become dependent because they like the psychological effects that are gained from the use. This is when the drug is being abused and drug treatment must be used in order to help with the chemical dependence.

Treatment for these issues starts with a drug detox center. The poisons must be properly removed from the body so that the mind and spirit can become stable and the recovery process can begin. Drug treatment centers use a variety of therapies and methods to effectively treat the emotional and dependence issues of each client. Many times there is a dual-diagnosis situation with addicts where they are suffering from a mental health disorder along with the substance abuse disorder.

Serves 12

This French toast is a favorite among our clients and staff. We normally serve it with our delicious maple sausage links or patties, golden hash browns, and fresh squeezed orange juice. It is important to stay spiritually and emotionally upbeat during a stay at a drug treatment center. It is not always easy to consistently achieve this, but great food and community bonding can help!

1 qt liquid eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

3 tablespoons sugar

¾ cup milk

1 teaspoon cinammon

12 pieces Texas toast

Procedure:

Using a whisk, whip all ingredients together

Preheat flat top to 350 F

Take piece of bread and dip in the egg mixture, make sure both sides of bread are covered.

Cook on oiled flat top until lightly browned on one side, flip over and do the same on the other side.

Cut from corner to corner, so the bread forms a triangle

Place cut French toast in a full 2 inch hotel pan and sprinkle powdered sugar on each piece.

Serves 6-8

One of the best Halibut recipes served in Utah’s best young adult drug Rehab centers. This entrée is a favorite among New Roads clients. Clients who didn’t like fish in the past like to eat fish now because of this recipe and it is requested frequently on our weekly menu.

2# Halibut, cut into 4-6 oz portions

1 ½ cups finely chopped cilantro

¾ cup finely chopped parsley

¾ cup dill

¾ cup white wine vinegar

2 ½ cup olive or blended oil

2 whole lemons

tt kosher salt

tt ground black pepper

DIrections

Make sure Grill is turned to medium high heat

To make the sauce add vinegar and gradually whisk in oil until thick, add all of the cilantro, parsley, dill and the juice of both lemons

Coat halibut with most of the sauce and let marinate for 30 minutes

Put the halibut on grill and cook until the internal temperature of the fish reaches 140 degrees

Add the remaining sauce evenly to each piece of fish

A great way to mix up the menu at New Roads from the normal beef or chicken meals is with this delicious and healthy feel good meal. Halibut is low in Saturated Fat and Sodium. It is also a good source of Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Magnesium and Potassium, and a very good source of Protein. One of the most important aspects of drug treatment is to stay healthy and keep your body full of energy.

Some of the good things that group therapy has done for individuals in a drug treatment center are:

Provides hope

Shows that others have experienced the same things

Gives advice

Shows that one can receive good things by giving

Provides a group format to discuss family issues

Learning behaviors through watching others

Two important professional issues to consider are to make sure that the clients are informed about the group process and therefore have given an informed consent and to emphasize the importance of confidentiality.

Serves 6-8

Some of the Best tasting Hot Wings prepared in any Utah drug rehab facility, or state eatery. The Taste is preferred by our drug rehab clients. We have them regularly on our weekly menu. The flavor profile is preferred over other Hot Wing Restaurants. They are prepared in the oven and not fried in oil, but baked to a golden crispy crunch. We add just the correct amount of seasonings, but start with a fresh chicken wing. We marinate the wings just right and add our special blend of wings. Again, some of the Best Hot Wings served in any Utah drug treatment center.

5#’s of Fresh Chicken Wings

2 Tbsp of kosher salt

2 Tbsp of Season Salt

1 Tbsp of Garlic Powder

2 Tbsp of Cayenne Pepper

Using Plastic gloves combine all above ingredients’ into a large mixing bowl, mixing and tossing well. Let marinate for a minimum of 2 hours. Keep refrigerated, and covered. Lay wings on a pan sprayed with food release or lay on top of baker’s paper. Place in pre-heated oven at 350°F. Bake for 30 minutes, remove and flip the wings over and place back into oven for an additional 30 minutes. Check the internal temp of a drumette, it should read 165°F.move from oven.

Sauce:

The day started out with the community’s morning reflections group. Everybody was in a great mood anxiously awaiting the beautiful scenery that can only come from finding peace during drug rehab in Utah. After stopping for one of Utah’s famous breakfast burritos it was up to the mountain resort for half pipes, rails, and a ton of snow!

The community was accompanied by Life Coach and recreational drug treatment counselors Peter Busch and Jessie Dennerline. Clients formed groups based on experience level so that experience fostered the community to bond. After a high energy morning full of a variety of runs a group lunch at the mountain lodge was great for recharging everybody. A few more runs in the afternoon and no injuries(yay) and everyone was ready for a nice cup of hot chocolate and the trip home.

The next trip can’t come soon enough!
